Frequently Asked Questions | The Belmont Clinic
For your convenience we have listed below the most frequently asked questions and answers we receive regarding anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers. If you happen to have a question which is not listed simply contact us.
Q: I hear about Botox and Azzalure everywhere, but what are they?
A: Botox and Azzalure are brand names for anti-wrinkle injection products. They are the originals and market leaders when it comes to botulinum toxin and are produced by Allergan and Galderma. You may find other medical aesthetics clinics using other botulinum type "A" drugs but referring to them as Botox. However, at The Belmont Clinic we only use the original and best products.
Please Note: These are prescription drugs and should therefore always be prescribed and administered by a medical prescriber.
Q: What is involved in a treatment?
A: The treatment is very straightforward and only takes a few minutes. A series of precise injections are administered into muscles using an extremely thin needle. Very little discomfort is experienced and clients often do not even realise the treatments have been completed. No anaesthetic is required and there is no down time.
Q: How do injections work?
A: The injections work by temporarily reducing the contraction of muscles therefore reducing their movement. This in turn reduces the creasing of the skin and smooths the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The treatments only work on the specific muscles injected, leaving surrounding muscles to function as normal, therefore maintaining normal facial expression.
The injections also work as a preventative treatment. If the skin is unable to crease, wrinkles are unable able to develop. Over time the benefits of this treatment become more impressive and longer lasting.
Q: Are the injections safe?
A: You may have heard reports of treatments going badly wrong. However, in the right hands it is actually a very safe treatment. These products have been used in medical procedures for over 30 years. Since the late 1980s they have successfully been used for cosmetic treatments with few complications.
With treatments of the forehead there is about a 1% chance of developing a drooping eyelid, or eyebrow, however the effects of the treatment are never permanent and any unwanted effects usually last for only a few days or a few weeks. Because of its low risk, anti-wrinkle is the most popular aesthetic treatment in the world.
Please Note: Always ensure you find a reputable, well qualified Practitioner to minimise the chance of any risks. At The Belmont Clinic we only use fully certified and experienced Practitioners.
Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: The actual injections only take around 10-15 minutes. However, any reputable Practitioner will spend around 45 minutes to 1 hour with a new client providing a thorough consultation. During this time they will ask about your medical history and discuss your wishes and expectations with reference to cosmetic treatments.
Q: What is the recovery time following treatment?
A: Following the treatment there may be minimal redness, bruising is uncommon but may occur occasionally. Most clients continue with their normal day without anybody noticing.
It is important not to massage or rub the areas after treatment. We therefore advise you not to have a facial or carry out any vigorous exercise the same day. We also recommend that you remain upright for 3-4 hours after your treatment.
Q: Do the injections hurt?
A: The needles used for the treatment are extremely fine and delicate. Therefore injections really do not hurt at all, many clients do not even realise they have received some of the injections.
Q: What facial areas can be treated?
A: The upper half of the face is most commonly treated - around 95% of all aesthetic treatments are administered here. Forehead lines, frown lines between the eyes and crow's feet are the most popularly treated areas to reduce the signs of ageing. Products such as Botox and Restylane can be used in other areas such as the chin, to reduce 'gummy smiles, and the armpits to reduce sweating, to name but a few.
Q: What are "Glabella" lines?
A: "Glabella Lines" is the medical term for frown lines between the eyes. The muscles which pull your eyebrows together often cause deep lines, sometimes appearing as the number "11". This area can be easily treated with injections.
Q: Can clients of any age receive treatments?
A: Your aesthetics Practitioner should take a full medical history prior to treating you to ensure it is safe. However, products such as Botox and Restylane work best as a preventative treatment.
The Belmont Clinic will only treat clients over the age of 18. The time to start treatment is when you start to develop dynamic lines (these are lines which are visible when you make an expression such as frowning) but before you have developed static lines (lines which are visible when your face is relaxed).
Dermal Filler Questions
Q: What are dermal fillers?
A: Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilised, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long lasting but not permanent.
Dermal filler treatments are widely used in medical aesthetics to add volume, plump up and reduce the appearance of lines and folds.
Q: What is hyaluronic acid?
A: Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the human body and is central to regulating cell growth and renewal. Hyaluronic acid impacts a number of functions in the body, some of which are to bind water, lubricate the movable parts of the body such as muscles and joints, and to maintain skin elasticity.
Q: How do dermal filler treatments work?
A: Due to the properties of hyaluronic acid, once injected an instant volumising effect can be seen, giving volume to the skin and longer term binding with water increasing hydration. Unwanted folds and wrinkles can be "plumped up" to reduce their appearance, resulting in smoother, more youthful looking skin.
Q: What are the benefits of dermal filler treatments?
A: Dermal filler injections provide an effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for around 6-9 months. Dermal filler injections can give natural looking results which do not affect facial expressions. As your face changes over time, dermal fillers enable you to subtly control your looks as you age.
Q: Are dermal filler treatments safe?
A: Everybody recalls the tragic results suffered by Leslie Ash in early 2000 after she received lip filler injections. The product used in her case was an injection of liquid silicone. This has no relationship at all to dermal fillers which are used today in aesthetic procedures.
There are a few issues and problems with hyaluronic acid fillers, however these are generally very rare. These issues should be discussed with your aesthetic Practitioner to ensure you know he or she is properly qualified so you are not added to a list of unsuccessful treatments and remain in safe hands.
Q: Which areas can be treated?
A: Dermal filler treatments are used to smooth away facial lines and wrinkles, create fuller lips and shape facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, and revitalise the skin.
The most common areas treated are:
Q: What is involved with dermal filler treatments?
All The Belmont Clinic medical treatments follow a detailed pre-treatment consultation. During the consultation you will discuss with your Practitioner what you want to achieve. Your Practitioner will then advise you which treatments will be most effective at helping you achieve your goals. If you decide to proceed your Practitioner will make a detailed recording of your medical history and conduct a careful examination of your face.
Following this, your Practitioner will explain which dermal filler option is best for your requirements and how you can expect to look afterwards.
The dermal filler is gently injected into specific areas of your skin to reduce the depth of the skin crease. Your Practitioner will customise the exact depth and number of injections to give you the most natural result. Different dermal fillers can be used in different areas of your face to produce the most effective result.
The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes and the results are immediately visible. Patients can continue with their normal day after treatment.
You should leave the treated area alone for 48 hours to let it settle. We advise you not to have a facial or similar treatment for 2 weeks as this may disturb the products or expose the newly treated areas to strong sunlight for 2-3 days.
In the days after the treatment there may be some redness and minimal swelling, which normally settles in 1-2 days. Occasionally patients can suffer some bruising at the injection area.
Your Practitioner will then arrange to see you for a review of your treatment.
Q: How long do the effects of a dermal filler treatment last?
A: One of the great advantages of dermal filler treatment is that the effects are long lasting but not permanent. Duration depends on many factors, such as the area treated, individual's skin type, skin condition, lifestyle and age. Generally the effects can last between 6-12 months.
Q: Does dermal filler treatment need pain relief?
A: Some clients may experience mild discomfort during the treatment. The lips are extremely sensitive and as such cause most discomfort. However, there are a range of dermal fillers available which contain local anaesthetic which alleviates any discomfort.
Alternatively, we can use local anaesthetic creams which are applied approximately 30 minutes prior to treatment which will ease any discomfort.
Q: Are there any risks with dermal fillers?
A: Product related reactions are rare. There are some minor injection related reactions which may occur after injection. These include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the injection area.
After lip enhancement, some swelling is likely for a short period.
